Batman v Superman Gets PG-13 Rating

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is officially rated. The PG-13 classification was expected, but the MPAA’s explanation of it was much less prosaic. The movie is rated PG-13 for its “intense sequences of violence and action throughout, and some sensuality.”

Violence and action we get, but what is this “sensuality” they speak of? Okay, we hear your jokes (and slightly disturbing flash fanfiction) about Batman and Superman losing their superhero outfits for birthday suits, but there’s actually a serious takeaway from the American trade association’s read on the movie’s content.

As Cinema Blend points out, the explanation may hint at Batman and Wonder Woman being more than just collaborators on crime-crushing assignments. The two have a bit of a history dating back to their days together on the animated Justice League series. It’s also possible the movie advances the relationship between Superman and Lois Lane, who were last seen together in Man of Steel, which had also received a PG-13 rating.

Gal Gadot plays Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman. The Amazonian warrior princess, like a lot of the other characters slated to feature in the movie, will get her own spotlight feature before 2020, as part of DC’s plans of widening the scope of its cinematic universe beyond Batman and Superman. Also making an entry via the tentpole production will be The Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg, played by Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, and Ray Fisher respectively.

DC’s upcoming repertoire seems to be headed down a decidedly gritty path, as evidenced by trailers for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and some of what we saw in Man of Steel. It appears DC, along with Warner Bros., intends on fashioning its content after Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, which was a more realistic rendering of a superhero mythos than we’re used to seeing. If that is the case, it will be another point of distinction between DC and Marvel, with the latter showing a clear preference for a more light-hearted tone for their movies.
