The ninth series of the modern reboot of Doctor Who just kicked off three Saturdays ago and we’ve seen some big news drop in that time. The biggest of news is the departure of the longest running companion to Matt Smith’s 11th Doctor and Peter Capaldi’s 12th Doctor, Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald. For those who don’t know, Coleman is leaving the series to play a young Queen Victoria in another British series.
In other Doctor Who news though, it looks like we’re going to get another spin-off series. Joining the ranks of Torchwood, that showcased the antics of Captain Jack Harkness (played by John Barrowman), and The Sarah Jane Adventures that starred former companion Elisabeth Sladen, the new series will be something a little bit different.
Called Class, the spin-off will be a series of eight episodes that are 45 minutes long and comes from the acclaimed young adult author Patrick Ness. The series is set in modern-day London and has incredible dangers breaking through the walls and fabric of time and space. London sits unprotected from this darkness. Doctor Who head Steven Moffat spoke praise of Ness and his writing.
“No one has documented the dark and exhilarating world of the teenager like Patrick Ness, and now we’re bringing his brilliant story-telling into Doctor Who. This is growing up in modern Britain —but with monsters!”
Of course, Ness was pretty excited about his move into TV as well.
“I’m astounded and thrilled to be entering the Doctor Who universe, which is as vast as time and space itself. There’s so much room there for all kinds of amazing stories, and to work with Steven Moffat and Brian Minchin to find a place to tell one of my own has been an absolute joy. I can’t wait for people to meet the heroes of Class, to meet the all-new villains and aliens, to remember that the horrors of the darkest corners of existence are just about on par with having to pass your A-Levels.”
The show will air on BBC three and will be filmed in-and-around Wales. It’s scheduled to begin during the spring next year and an air-date has yet to be announced. We’ll let you know when we find out.
