Hail, Caesar! Trailer Is The Coen Brothers In All Their Kooky Comedic Glory

|

Before someone tries to lecture me on the dangers of premature excitement brought on by reposing inordinate amounts of faith in a trailer, I’d like to quote Jay Z: “I’m from the hood stupid, what type of facts are those?”

I know a great trailer doesn’t always mean a great movie. We’ve all walked out of theaters wondering what sorcery convinced us to spend time and money on the bilge that showed on the screen (We’re looking at you, Tron:Legacy) . And often, the answer is – the trailer. But I’ll be damned the day the Coen brothers release a preview this well done and I don’t at least write an article touting the movie it foreshadows.

The trailer for Ethan and Joel Coen’s upcoming movie Hail, Caesar! is a peppy ragbag of choreographed song and dance candy-striped by moments of droll humor and unwilled screwballing. Amidst the chaos are the strains of a plot.

Eddie Mannix, played by Josh Brolin, is a Hollywood studio fixer – an employee who’s only job it is to keep the public image of celebrities squeaky clean. Mannix has an unenviable responsibility to begin with, but his job turns a whole lot crazier when “one of the biggest stars in the world,” Baird Whitlock (George Clooney), is abducted by an outfit called “The Future.” The dash to retrieve the actor sends Mannix through the sets of productions featuring Scarlett Johansson dressed as a mermaid, Ralph Fiennes playing a director, and Channing Tatum tap-dancing along with his sailor buddies. Tilda Swinton and Frances McDormand are thrown into the mix for good measure. You can check out the full trailer below.

Hail, Caesar! belongs in the same class of Coen Brothers movies as Intolerable Cruelty and Burn After Reading. Since their last directorial venture Inside Llewyn Davis, the Coens have worked on the screenplay for Angelina Jolie directed Unbroken and Steven Spielberg’s thriller Bridge of Spies, which comes out this month

Hail, Caesar! releases February 5, 2016.
