After debuting to mostly positive reviews, CBS announced that it has ordered seven more episodes of DC Comics’ Supergirl, giving the series a full 20 episode season. The superheroine show starring Melissa Benoist as Kara Zor-El launched on October 26, and quickly became one of the top rated programs of the fall television season.

CBS made the announcement earlier today through a press release, officially giving all four of its latest series full seasons which include Code Black, Life In Pieces and Limitless. Supergirl replaced a comedy block upon its debut and improved the network’s viewership for that time period from the previous year by 46 percent.

The series created by Arrow and The Flash show runners Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisber, along with The New Normal co-creator Ali Alder, averages 11.24 million viewers and had the largest debut audience for any comic book TV adaptation this decade. Its 12.94 million viewers topped previous record holder Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., which debuted to 12.12 million viewers for ABC in 2013.

The show stars Benoist as Kara Zor-El/Danvers AKA Supergirl, Mehcad Brooks of Necessary Roughness fame, Grey’s Anatomy’s Chyler Leigh, Smash’s Jeremy Jordan, as well as David Harewood and Calista Flockhart.

It’s important to note that the seven episode pickup brings the show two episodes shy of the usual 22 episode mark of a full season. Though, this could be related to the steady decline in viewership, which is to be expected following such a strong start, this is likely due to the fact that DC Comics property began in the middle of the fall TV slate, rather than the beginning.

In a period where strong female leads are lacking — especially in comic book properties — Fall 2015 provides one from both DC and Marvel. Supergirl along with Marvel’s Jessica Jones are providing increased gender representation in a manner in which fans have been asking for throughout the past few years.
