The Sennheiser Momentum 2 Series Review: Amazing Sound, Great Build Quality

I’m not an audiophile by any means. But, I do know what I enjoy in a pair of headphones. Good sound is first and foremost, followed by build quality and comfort. If you take a look at the back of the box of the Sennheiser Momentum 2 series, you’ll find the headphones advertise these key aspects. That’s right. So when I was asked to review these headphones, I was more than interested.

In my research of these headphones, prior to receiving them, I found these headphones do come at a pretty penny, which is $349.95. The Sennheiser Momentum 2 series boasts high quality and comfort at a lower-end premium price but, are these headphones worth your consideration. Let’s see.

Design

The moment you open the box you’re greeted with a box that screams quality. The headphones came folded inside a pouch, that in turn, comes inside a zip up container. This treatment makes it easy for anyone to keep these headphones in pristine condition.

You can tell from the moment you take the Momentum headphones out of the box that they’re really well built. The color I received to review were black. The headband is made of black leather with a tan stitching.

The cups continue the leather trend with leather covered soft pads that cup the ears comfortably, which I assume are designed to be comfortable for an extended period of time.

During extended use, I found the headphones to be extremely comfortable from when I first put them on and a few hours later. Inside the cups, the speakers are covered with a tan colored fabric that matches the stitching found in the leather on the headband.

The cups are attached to the headband via knobs with the Sennheiser logo etched on them. They are able to slide up and down the brushed metal headband from that point, allowing you to find the right fit for your head. Speaking of these knobs, you can adjust the headband forward or backward from that point, so it’ll fit comfortably on your head.

The cord itself comes in on the right cup of the headset. The 1.4-meter cord is detachable and locks into place by swiveling the 3.5mm jack into the plug. On the cord is a plug to play/pause and accept phone calls. You can also control the volume from that puck.

During my uses, it worked the way it should. I tried it on my old Note 4 as the headphones were designed for Galaxy devices. It worked well on that, as well as my old LG G4 and Moto G. I tried it on my current iPhone and while the play/pause controls worked, the volume didn’t — a problem I think would be alleviated if I had a pair specifically designed for the iPhone.

Sound/Call Quality

Here’s what the Momentums are packing:

  • Frequency Response: 16-22,000Hz
  • Mic Response: 100-10,000Hz
  • Impedance: 18 Ω
  • Sound Pressure Level: 113 dB (1kHz/1Vrms)
  • Total Harmonic Distortion: <0.5% 1kHz
  • Coupling: Circumaural
  • Transducer Principle:
Dynamic, closed
  • Pickup pattern:
Omni-directional

The most important part of any headphone review and probably the reason you’re here. Even with a wonderful design, it wouldn’t mean a thing if the headphones sounded terrible. You’ll be happy to know; this pair of Momentum 2 headphones has the sound quality to back up the build quality.

These headphones mix a perfect mesh of sound and instruments and the clarity means you’ll hear ever single note. As I do with every single pair of headphones I use, I play a playlist on Spotify that gives me a good idea of what they can offer.

From the heart-pounding vocals of Rise Against’s Tim McIlrath to bass-pushing hip-hop, these headphones deliver great sound without being overly heavy in any category. In my listening experience, I was able to hear the sounds of instruments I didn’t even know were in the albums I’ve listened to before. Because of this, I’ve found myself going through all of my most favorite albums. Thanks to these headphones, I have a new-found appreciation for the music that has occupied my ears for the past 20 years.

I’ve found I have the urge to just lay on the couch and just listen to music. This is something I’ve not done in over a decade, but something I plan on continuing to do, thanks to these headphones.

Unrelated to music, I tried these headphones with my Xbox One and I found gaming to be a joy. Not only did the sound of my rifle plinking away sound amazing in Destiny, but I found the game’s soundtrack to be even more enjoyable.

These headphones do come in with a built-in headset function and like listening to music, the sound quality of the person on the other side was great and more clear than most other headsets I’ve used. The mic worked well, too.

Price/Value

Normally these headphones are $349.95, which in my opinion is a steal for the sound quality you’re getting, but at that price, others may find these headphones to be a bit pricey. That would be the only reason I would give pause in recommending these to most people.

I’m no audiophile, I’ve already established that, but these headphones have given me a blatant perspective of the sound I’ve been missing with other headphones — along with the realization that my belief of good sound was completely off kilter before.

Right now, the headphones are on sale at Sennheiser for $249.95, though most models seem to be out of stock at this time (thank you holiday season). Here’s the thing, from a value standpoint and with the sale that’s going on through the end of the year, you can either get any of the the bass-heavy (and not great quality) Beats headphones valued at the same price, or, you can pick up a pair of Seinnheiser Momentum headphones.

If you do, you’ll get the same functions with a lot better sound for a similar price and the piece of mind that you didn’t just pay for a name like you would with certain popular brands.

Wrap Up

When it comes to a lot of purchases in life, you get what you pay for. The Sennheiser Momentum series is no different. You get crystal clear audio for the same price as the top-end Beats headphones. Unlike the aforementioned headphones, Seinnheiser delivers balanced sound that makes listening to music a joy.

You get a headset built into high-quality headphones that come at a pretty penny. At a price of $350, you’re reaching a point where it’s enough coin to cause some people to look elsewhere. However, if you act now, you can get the headphones for $100 off, which make these a steal.

Even if you miss out on that deal, you’re getting great quality and I have a feeling that I will still be using this exact pair of headphones well into the next decade. They’re built that well.

These headphones have made me fall in love with listening to music all over again. Something I can’t say for a lot of headphones I’ve used in my day. Sure, you could go with a more budget friendly option, but you’d be making a mistake in passing these headphones up.
